. In addition to the normal Buckler properties, it offers +1 to Constitution so long as it is worn.

Description[]

A rectangle of mammoth hide forms this small shield. No amount of cleansing can dispel the pong of decay from this poorly tanned device, yet somehow the malodorous shield fortifies its wielder.

Gameplay[]

Characters with a Constitution score of 20 begin naturally regenerating hit points at the rate of +1 hp/turn (1 turn = 10 rounds = 1 real time minute, or 10 minutes of in-game time).

If during character creation the player chooses a race of Half-orc or Dwarf and sets their Constitution to the max of 19, then equipping Buckley's Buckler will give Gorion's Ward regeneration as soon as the The Friendly Arm, in Chapter One.

Other races (except for Elves) will have to wait until they acquire the Manual of Bodily Health. Elves cannot naturally regenerate at all in Baldur's Gate LOGOBG00001 Icon SoDBaldur's Gate:

.

Moreover, Buckley's Buckler allows Barbarian Half-orcs and Dwarves who start with 19 Constitution to reach 25 via the use of the aforementioned Manual of Bodily Health and Barbarian Rage, allowing the character to regenerate 1hp every 10 seconds (6 seconds = 1 round, so it's just over 1.6 rounds) very early in BGEE. Though, of course, this is limited by the short duration of Barbarian Rage (5 rounds), but with two casts the 25 Constitution can be kept up for 10 rounds.

Finally, the Constitution increase from this item can be used as emergency healing for certain characters, depending on their Constitution, class and level, as any hp increase gained from equipping it remains for as long as it stays equipped. For example, a badly injured level 9 Eldoth (15 CON) that currently has 7hp and equips this shield (perhaps switching away from an equipped bow to a sword-and-shield setup) will get +9hp (current and maximum) as a result of it and, due to the fact equipping a shield or switching weapon sets is a "free action" in combat, he can still drink a potion of healing in the same round, meaning he can instantly get +18hp to go from a dangerous 7hp to a reasonably safe 25hp.

Bugs[]

  • The description states "No protection against missile and piercing attacks", while there actually are penalties of 1 to these kinds of physical damage.
  • The in-game icon shows a circular buckler even though the description portrays it as rectangular in shape.
