A Guard is a relatively generic term to describe various mercenaries, regularly encountered throughout Baldur's Gate. They are freelance, in that they don't represent any common mercenary band such as the Flaming Fist or Black Talons, but are instead hired directly by corporations, establishments, or individuals for the purpose of protection. A Long Sword seems to be standard issue, while their armor can be anything from Leather Armor to Plate Mail Armor, with or without a shield.
The Friendly Arm Inn hires them to serve as its own local police force, protecting well-to-do travelers and residents.
