Mae'Var is a Shadow Thief who is the leader of one of the smaller guildhalls in the city of Athkatla. Not content with his current station, he is planning to assassinate Renal Bloodscalp so he can rise in rank within the Shadow Thief hierarchy.

It is rumored that Mae'Var may have been hired by Irenicus to kidnap Gorion's Ward and that he conspired with the Night Knives of Esmeltaran to snatch the Ward outside the city of Baldur's Gate and bring the prisoner to Amn.  [verification needed]

Gameplay[]

Once hostilities breakout against Mae'Var, he and his fellow guild members will be waiting in the lower level of the guild. By script, he was designed to cast a number of spells, and utilize his fairly high-level mage ability. The creature script is well designed and extensive for the unmodded game. The problem is (developer error?) that he has equipped armor that disables spell casting. So, while it is possible in the game engine coding to force a spell cast by script even if wearing armor, this is actually not the case, and Mae'Var can't cast any of his spells. The info box documents what spells he might have been able to use.

Baldur's Gate II[]

During the events of the Shadows of Amn, Renal Bloodscalp will send you to work under Mae'Var to spy on him and find proof of his suspected treachery. if proof can be found, Renal will most likely want you to dispatch Mae'Var.

Mae'Var has enlisted the thayan mage Edwin Odesseiron to his services - but Gorion's Ward will learn that Edwin is open to betray his new master during the Mae'Var Treachery quest.

Installation of the Sword Coast Stratagems mod makes some revisions to Mae'Var. He is a level 13/15 Mage/Thief with Conjurer Kit. To begin with, he is assigned a new default AI script combining his ability to backstab and spell cast as a mage. If you have the "Smarter Mages" component installed this will be included. He gets some different memorized spells to work with as well. Mae'Var also is no longer wearing any equipped torso armor (he still has the invisible HELMNOAN.ITM). This allows SCS to be able to employ its existing spell casting scripts for the Mage/Thief.

At the beginning of hostilities, he will employ a spell contingency protecting himself with Improved Invisibility, Non-detection and Spell Deflection. If he is approached by an invisble opponent, the SCS script will show an on-screen text message indicating he has heard something or suspects a spy, and he auto casts an Oracle spell. His cohorts and allied Priest of Cyric will also move toward any detected intruders.

Mae'Var also has a Minor Sequencer loaded with a double Color Spray attack. If given enough time, the tricky rogue will also be able to get up a PfMW, and cast Disintegrate at a vulnerable party member. In short, the SCS version of Mae'Var is a much more difficult challenge than the unmodded game. Mae'Var and any allied thieves (who turn invisible via potions) will attempt backstab attacks on the party.
