When first meeting Melicamp, he is referred to as Melicamp the Chicken.
Melicamp is a mage in training who seems to be more keen on acquiring power, rather than learning how to properly use it.
After stealing equipment from his master Thalantyr the Conjurer, Melicamp attempted to cast a polymorph spell. The spell, unfortunately too complicated for his meagre talents, turned him into a chicken. It is not revealed exactly what he intended to polymorph himself into, though obviously his intent was not to become a chicken.
