Monster Summoning III summons a random selection of powerful monsters.

Monster Summoning III
This spell is much like the 3rd-level Monster Summoning I spell, except that this spell summons 5-HD monsters. There is a 60% chance of receiving one monster and a 40% chance of receiving two monsters. These monster(s) appear within spell range and attack the caster's opponents until the spell duration expires or until they are slain.

Usage notesEdit

Monster Summoning III summons Ogrillons, Ghouls, Dire Wolves or Worgs. The Ghouls are overall the best, as they are immune to petrification and have a paralyzing touch. Dire Wolves and Worgs are fast while Ogrillons are the strongest summons available in Baldur's Gate.

Although this is a more advanced version of Monster Summoning II, it is less useful in actual combat because it only summons melee attackers, while Monster Summoning II can bring forth ranged Hobgoblins. The increased HP is generally not worth the spell slot, because powerful enemies will slay any summon in 1-2 hits anyway.

While Hasted, a pack of Ghouls summoned by this spell are very formidable against anything that isn't undead. However, Ghouls and Ogrillons are a rare summon, the most likely outcome are Worgs or Dire Wolves.
