Rayic Gethras is a Cowled Wizard who is found in his home which is located in the Docks District of the city of Athkatla. Gorion's Ward will have to confront him in connection with the Find Proof of Mae'Var's Treachery side quest.

Hold! How dare you intrude on my studies!

— Rayic Gethras

After stealing the Necklace of Talos from Mistress Ada in the Temple of Talos (or the statue of Lathander from the Temple of Lathander), Mae'Var will direct you to Edwin who in turn will ask you to kill Rayic Gethras for him. Make sure you prepare before fighting him as he can cast several high-level spells including Finger of Death.

Gameplay[]

Rayic will speak seconds after the party enters the floor where he awaits you. Dialogue choices/replies are offered, and it is certainly possible to simply say that you are sorry for blundering into his home, and will depart - and then attack before he is hostile, and has no protective buffs up. This surprise attack is the easiest, and least heroic way to defeat Rayic. If you want a challenge, let him know you are here to kill him, let the wizard launch his Spell Trigger, and then have a fairer fight. Its up to the party and role play as desired.

If you attempt to approach Rayic hidden or invisible, or not, he'll initiate dialogue, and then after a few seconds casts True Sight. If Rayic is silenced, he attempts a Vocalize spell. If the party conjures any summoned creatures, he'll try and launch a Death Spell.

His class script will instantly cast a spell trigger at the onset of hostilities that provides him the following protections:

Offensively, Rayic is scripted to use all of the spells memorized as seen in the InfoBox. Power words, symbols and offensive damage spells, as well as instant death and disabling spells will be attempted, if the wizard is given enough time to do so. The key to taking down the mage is to disrupt the spell casting before it gets out of hand, and if any damage can be applied to the wizard, he'll likely be defeated in short order.

The Sword Coast Stratagems mod with the "Smarter Mages" component revises this mage. He'll likely have an assigned mage kit such as Necromancer.

The AI will give a new batch of memorized spells along with prepared and ready to deploy Minor Sequencer and Spell Sequencer. Rayic will instantly launch a battery of "previously cast" protective buffs at the outset of hostilities, including Minor Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Deflection, Spell Immunity (or "Dispelling Screen with SR, Shield (spell), Protection From Normal Missiles, Spirit Armor and Stoneskin.

If the Necromance kit is assigned, the first spell attempted will be to cast Animate Dead (wizard) and bring forth a Skeleton Warrior. After that, if the wizard is able, he will select further spell casts as determined by the AI's evaluation of the party's vulnerabilities and threats.

With the Spell Revisions mod installed; all spells will be the SR versions.
