Semi-precious stones are a classification of gems, mainly to determine treasure value and commonness in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset, which the Baldur's Gate series is based on. The mechanics are roughly transferred to the series' games.
Semi-precious stones are very common and the second-least valuable stones in the Forgotten Realms.

Gem table[]
Frequency d100 | Base value [] | Class |
---|---|---|
01 – 25 | 10 | Ornamental |
26 – 50 | 50 | Semi-precious |
51 – 70 | 100 | Fancy |
71 – 90 | 500 | Precious |
91 – 99 | 1000 | Gems |
00 | 5000 | Jewels |
The base value has a chance of ten percent to be higher or lower than stated.
Additionally, a d6 could be rolled to make further modifications to a gem's value.[1]
The games of the Baldur's Gate series implement the frequency roll and the possible base value modifications by number of appearances and presence in random treasure tables and by a fixed value for each different type of gem.
Semi-precious stones in Baldur's Gate[]
The following table lists all stones from the Baldur's Gate series that are as per pen-and-paper rules classified as semi-precious. Besides their – here fixed – value from the games, it also lists the number of guaranteed (partially under certain conditions) appearances, but does not reflect their percentage as random treasure. The appearances are separated by base games and expansions, without mentioning Tales of the Sword Coast explicitely.
Gem | Value | Baldur's Gate | Siege of Dragonspear | Shadows of Amn | Throne of Bhaal | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bloodstone | 50 | 13 | 1 | 11 | 0 | |
Skydrop | 40 | 6 | 0 | 3 | 0 |
