The Shadow Thieves are an organization that operate through agents all over Western Faerun among their many bases. Their head base is in the Athkatla Docks in the city of Athkatla, and their highest leader is Aran Linvail. They thrive in criminal activity.

Baldur's Gate[]

The Shadow Thieves make a brief appearance in Baldur's Gate. In Chapter Seven, Husam reveals that the Shadow Thieves are being falsely accused of murdering Entar Silvershield, after a mark that resembles their organization is left on his body, as intended by the real assassins Slythe and Krystin.

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn[]

In Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, the Shadow Thieves are more involved with the main plot. They are first seen storming Irenicus's Dungeon, for unknown reasons, and a few of their assassins are then seen in Waukeen's Promenade attacking Irenicus himself. In Chapter 2, the player must choose whether to side with Bodhi and her vampires or Aran Linvail and his Shadow Thieves. When the choice is made, this starts Chapter 3. If the player sides with Bodhi then their main objective will be to kill Aran. If the player sides with the Shadow Thieves then their main objective will be to destroy the vampire guild and kill Bodhi. In Chapter 6, the player can get help from the Shadow Thieves in the attempt to finally kill Bodhi.

Notes[]

  • Not all "named" Shadow Thieves in the game are Thieves. For example, Anishai is a Monk.
  • Likewise, many creatures in the game that are named only as "Shadow Thief" are not Thieves. For example
    • More than a handful of the Shadow Thieves in Renal Bloodscalp's Guildhall are Fighters (StGuard2.cre and StGuard3.cre). These are Shadow Thief Guards by the nomenclature of their creature file names.
    • The Shadow Thief who guards Kich is a Dwarven Fighter.
    • Mage and Fighter/Mage Shadow Thieves also exist in the game, as well as dual-classed varieties; Mage/Thief and Fighter/Thief.
  • Likewise, many creatures files named "Assassin" are also affiliated with, and members of, the Shadow Thieves by virtue of the game's internal "actor" name used in the Area files. Not surprisingly, the terms "Thief" and "Assassin" are interchangeable as Assassin is a Kit that Thieves may choose, along with Bounty Hunter, and a few others. For example, actors named "Shadow Thief" (ISThf01.cre) and "Shadow Thief Archer" (Isthf04.cre) in Irenicus' Dungeon Level 2 have the appearance of thieves, but are named "Assassin" by their creature files.
