Shortbows are commonly used by hobgoblins, kobolds and bandits. Shortbows can be used by fighters, paladins, rangers, thieves and bards and require two able hands to be used. Shortbows can use all arrows as ammunition, whether they are enchanted or not. This weapon appears in the games of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur's Gate II. In the game of Baldur's Gate, this item is sold at almost all shops selling weapons, such as Candlekeep Inn, Thunderhammer Smithy, Friendly Arm Inn and many more.

Shortbows were the first bows to be developed, although they were not called such. This is more of a default term that refers to anything which is not a longbow. Shortbow staves are about five feet long on the average. As the years passed, attempts were made to increase bow ranges. Bows were either given longer staves or flexibility was increased with no change to the length. The former resulted in what is now called the longbow.
