There's a WHAT in their chicken? is a side quest that can be acquired in the Umar Hills during the Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn campaign.

The Witness[]

At the north end of the village talk to the farmer Jeb (3775.1550) and tell him that you are an adventurer. For a little money he has a little adventure for you; 10gp won't do it, but 20gp will. He says that he saw the chicken farmer putting something in his chicken. He doesn't know what it was, but it must be worth something.

The Chicken Farmers[]

Go southwest of Jeb to talk to the chicken farmer, Erlin Hendrick (3225.1900). For Erlin, the jig is up, as he eventually admits he hid something. You can either:

  • Buy the chicken for as little as 10gp to which Erlin agrees, but replies, "'Tis a terrible price...as me daughter paid for it with her life."
  • Offer 50gp for a "Fair" reply, but no additional rewards (XP or otherwise).
  • Offer 100gp for a "More than Fair...and a fine headstone" reply, but no added rewards.
  • Demand Hendrick to give it to you and he might say "you're terrible" and "evil" but he will give it to you, without Reputation loss.
  • Kill the chickens, which turns Enna hostile. Her husband will soon calm her down, so try to avoid killing her (at a normal Reputation loss for murdering an innocent).
Note: Buying the chicken, at any price, does not actually deduct gold from the party. This fixed in the EE version.

The Hidden Gem[]

The prize is a Beljuril gem, with a Base Value of 2,000gp (as most stores have a Buy Markup of 30%, it can be sold for 600gp). It's also a component to upgrade the Bronze Horn of Valhalla to the Iron Horn of Valhalla.

Gameplay[]

In classic game you may steal the gem from the "middle south" chicken (3060.1900), and then talk to Erlin to obtain another. (No longer possible in EE.)
