Weapon proficiency determines how well someone can handle certain types of weapon, which may add penalties or bonuses, depending on the skill. All non-warrior classes can become only proficient with certain weapon types. Paladins & rangers can only become specialized. Only fighters are able to invest five slots in any weapon proficiency they may use.

Slots gained per level by classEdit

Each class gains proficiency slots (points which can be spent on proficiencies and weapon styles) at a different rate. The levels in which each class gains those slots are:

Maximum slots allowed per class in BG2Edit

Each class has a different maximum amount of slots allowed for weapon and fighting style proficiencies. Multi-class combinations are limited by the class choices; fighter combinations can be Specialized, while non-fighter combinations can only be Proficient. Dual-classing gives the better of the two caps; even a mere 2 level dip in fighter allows 5 slots to be spent on any weapon you want. Dual classing risks wasting and permanently losing any duplicate slot expenditure, as the slots spent are not combined if you take the same proficiency in both classes, so keep track of what you have spent.

Class kits have the same proficiency restrictions as the base class unless otherwise noted.
